The army chief is scheduled to visit the United States again.

The army chief is heading back to the US, marking his second visit in a short period.

WASHINGTON: As per official sources, Field Marshal Asim Munir, Chief of the Army Staff, is expected in the US this week, as per official sources, for meetings with US counterparts.

The sources indicated this would be a follow-up meeting after US Central Command (CENTCOM) leader General Michael Erik Kurilla visited Pakistan in late July.

In a press statement issued on Aug 4, CENTCOM recalled Gen Kurilla’s recent travels to Pakistan and other countries in the region.

During this travel, Gen Kurilla also received the Nishan-i-Imtiaz (Military), which is awarded by the Pakistani government.

Field Marshal Munir was in Washington in June, where he had a lunch meeting with President Donald Trump, which is an extraordinary mark of hospitality for someone who is not an official head of government.

There was no statement on the trip from Inter-Services Public Relations and the Pakistan embassy in Washington; however, the army chief did indicate that he was looking forward to traveling to the US again later in the year.

This progresses just a week after the US general labeled Pakistan a ‘phenomenal partner’ during a congressional hearing on counterterrorism. He also cited Pakistan’s contribution toward ‘peace and stability’ in the region.

No aspirations for presidency

As reported by Dawn.com, ISPR’s head has dismissed the speculation that Field Marshal Asim Munir COAS would become president.

This follows the rebuttal by the minister for interior, Mohsin Naqavi, earlier in July, where he mentioned that there is no concept “of the president being in power and the COAS intending to take over the presidency.”

In the recent interview, Lt Gen Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry told The Economist that the rumors of the president being his boss are complete nonsense.
