Mayor Urges PM to Act Against Sindh Governor’s Political Role
KARACHI – Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab has taken aim at Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori, accusing him of indulging in politics despite holding a constitutionally apolitical office. Wahab urged the prime minister to take notice of the governor’s conduct, saying his role should rise above party lines.
“Can a governor be engaged in politics?” the mayor asked reporters on Saturday after inaugurating several development projects in Korangi. “The governor should not carry any political party’s flag. He should raise the slogan of Pakistan Zindabad, not represent any party.”
His remarks came in response to Tessori’s recent comments about the possible comeback of “bhai” and a revival of the “old MQM.” In a pointed dig, Wahab quipped, “Perhaps he thinks of himself as ‘Bhai’.”
Development works in Korangi
The mayor also laid the foundation stone for a series of uplift projects in district Korangi, vowing that the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) was committed to serving Karachi without political discrimination.
“Today’s Karachi is transforming under the leadership of Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari,” Wahab said. “We don’t care which UC belongs to whom. If there are Karachiites living there, Bilawal’s party will deliver.”
He highlighted recent progress in the city’s long-troubled water system, claiming credit for the completion of the new Hub Canal. “This revolutionary step is a slap in the face of those who only made promises,” Wahab declared, adding that the project was the first major improvement in Karachi’s water supply in more than two decades.
The mayor also criticized the repeated political inaugurations of the stalled K-IV water project. “It has been inaugurated five times by five different prime ministers and leaders, yet nothing moved. Now your jiyala mayor and deputy mayor have delivered the new Hub Canal and started our share of the K-IV works.”
Social services highlighted
Wahab further noted that a new center for special children had been opened in Korangi, offering free healthcare, education, and training. With support from the Sindh chief minister and health minister, he added, a fully equipped Child Health Center had also been set up in the district.
