Diesel Price Falls Rs12 as Petrol Remains Unchanged

Diesel prices drop by Rs12, while petrol rates stay unchanged, offering mixed relief to motorists and businesses.

ISLAMABAD: The Finance Division on Friday night announced a sharp cut of Rs12.84 per litre in the price of high-speed diesel (HSD) for the next fortnight, while keeping petrol prices unchanged.

The new price of HSD now stands at Rs272.99 per litre, compared to petrol, which remains at Rs264.61. The prices of superior kerosene oil and light diesel oil were also reduced by Rs7.19 and Rs8.20 per litre, respectively.

The Finance Division said the revision was made “in line with the recommendations of OGRA (Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority) and the concerned ministries.”

HSD is regarded as highly inflationary since it powers heavy transport vehicles, trains, and much of the agricultural machinery — from tractors and tube wells to threshers — and directly affects the prices of vegetables and other essentials.

Market watchers had expected HSD prices to decline by about Rs11.50 per litre, while petrol was forecast to rise slightly by Rs1.40. International fuel trends, however, painted a mixed picture: petrol rose by 15 cents per barrel, while diesel fell by about $4.50 per barrel. A marginal appreciation of the rupee against the dollar also helped ease local diesel rates.

This is the second relief in recent weeks. On July 31, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif approved a cut of Rs6.17 per litre in petrol and Rs10.86 in HSD, with both reductions larger than initially projected.

Petrol, widely used in private cars, motorcycles, and rickshaws, has a direct impact on middle- and lower-income households, while diesel’s price changes ripple across transport and food markets.
