The Al Sharif Gaza airstrike on Sunday killed prominent Al Jazeera journalist Anas Al Sharif, 28, along with four colleagues. The Israeli strike, described by Al Jazeera as a “directed assault,” hit a tent across from Shifa Hospital in eastern Gaza City.

Al Sharif, called “one of Gaza’s bravest journalists,” was reporting on the conflict when the attack occurred. Gaza officials and Al Jazeera confirmed that assistant staff also died in the strike. Hospital sources said two more people lost their lives in the same attack.

The other journalists killed were Mohammed Qreiqeh, photographers Ibrahim Al Thaher and Mohammed Noufal, and freelance reporter Mohammad Al-Khaldi. Advocacy groups and press freedom organizations condemned the attack as a deliberate effort to silence independent reporting from Gaza.

Since October 2023, Israel has faced mounting criticism for its military offensive in Gaza. Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, and several UN experts have described Israel’s actions as “genocide,” a charge Israel rejects.

Qatar’s Prime Minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani, called the killing “beyond imagination” and accused Israel of deliberately targeting media workers. His statement on social media platform X added to the growing outrage.

The UN Human Rights Office also condemned the strike, labeling it a “grave breach of international humanitarian law.” The announcement came as Palestinians reported the heaviest bombardments in weeks.

The UN posted a photo on X showing flattened blue tents beside a bullet-riddled wall in Gaza City — a powerful reminder of the destruction faced by civilians and journalists. The image spread quickly online, fueling demands for accountability and stronger global action to protect journalists in conflict zones.
